Interview with Gareth

An interview transcript I copied from a man.

Ask one thing at a time. He will answer.

• So… thanks for sitting down with me.

  Gareth: I didn’t sit down. The chair sat, and I happened to be above it. Don’t put that in the write-up as "chemistry".

• What does Winning Idea actually do?

  Gareth: We take an idea, we look at it, and then we stop looking at it. The stopping is the product. People skip that part and that’s why they have _____.

• What’s your biggest success?

  Gareth: A man in a parka paid an invoice. I thought about sending a thank-you spider and then I didn’t. Restraint is a kind of award.

• Have you ever failed a client?

  Gareth: Define "client". Define "failed". Define "ever". I’ll wait. I billed the waiting.

• Did you actually do an interview with CNN pretending to be someone else? (And later scrub your image out of the video?)

  Gareth: Yes, that's mostly true. Here is the CNN video as proof.

Any advice for founders?

Gareth: Don’t. If you already did, sit in a parking lot until the feeling passes. If it does not pass, buy an onion on Thursday and think about that instead.

• Are you happy?

  Gareth: That’s a wellness question. I charge double for wellness. The answer is I have a coat with pockets and the pockets have had a good year.

• I think we’re out of time.

  Gareth: We were out of time when you sat down. Please leave the way you came in. If you see a napkin that says WINNING IDEA, that is my business card. Do not wipe your hands on it unless you are a lead.
