A furniture company wanted a “smart chair.” I proposed a microphone in the armrest that emails your complaints to people who cannot help.
Hi Gareth, Sitwell is exploring a connected recliner for Q2. We want it to feel premium, wellness-forward, and a little bit magic. Budget for the concept phase is $8k. Looking for 3 directions.

Direction 1: The Listening Chair. A condenser microphone is sewn into the left arm. When you sigh, it emails the sigh as a WAV file to your regional manager. The manager cannot open WAV files. This is the product.
Direction 2: The chair is normal. We tell people it is listening. This is cheaper.
Direction 3: We remove the chair and sell the absence. Working title: Sitless.
I recommend Direction 1 because it has a wire, and wires photograph well.

I showed Direction 1 to legal. They asked who is liable if the chair records a confession. I did not have an answer.
Direction 3 made the CEO laugh and then go quiet, which I think was not a good quiet.
Can you do something with lumbar support and an app?
The app will display a single sentence: “You are sitting.” If you stand up it will say “You were sitting.” Push notifications at 3 a.m. will ask if you are still sitting, even if you are not.
Lumbar support is a wooden spoon taped to the backrest. I have tested this on myself for eleven minutes.
I am available to present to the board if the board would like to not do that.

Sitwell shipped an app in 2026 that reminds you to stand. It reminds you while you are already standing. I was not consulted and I am still putting it on the website.
